Ingredients Needed
- Bread: For this recipe, you’ll need some white bread slices. I suggest using slices that aren’t too thin so they can hold the weight if you want toppings!
- Sauce: Of course, what’s a pizza without some pizza sauce? You can either use jarred sauce or make a homemade sauce! For a homemade option check out my incredible Roasted Tomato Pizza Sauce.
- Cheese: I suggest using fresh mozzarella cheese because it has the best quality and taste. But you can use freshly shredded cheese as well.
- Optional Meat Topping: Use mini pepperonis or some salami for a protein and flavor boost. This will make the pizza toasts heartier and more satisfying!

Recipe Variations
- Make it Vegan: Make vegan pizza by using vegan cheese slices instead and ensuring the bread and sauce are vegan-friendly, too.
- Add Seasonings: You can add additional seasonings to the sauce, such as Italian seasoning or garlic powder, if you want the flavor to be richer!
- Add Veggies or Herbs: For instance, add fresh tomatoes, red onions, fresh basil, olives, or peppers. There are plenty of different options that can elevate the taste of the pizza toast. One good idea is to use tomato slices and basil for a caprese-style snack.
- Cooking Method: you can always cook these pizza toasts using other cooking methods, such as using an air fryer or a toaster oven. Keep in mind that the cooking time will likely change, so keep an eye on it! You can also use a frying pan. I suggest using medium heat and greasing the pan with cooking spray or olive oil first. Then, toast the bread and heat up the sauce separately. Add the sauce, then the cheese, and cover with a lid so that the cheese will melt from the steam!
- Make Japanese Pizza Toast: Make a variation of Japanese Pizza Toast by using Japanese milk bread. Use the slice of bread as the base, and load it with the sauce and cheese as usual. Then, add salty meat like diced or sliced ham, onions, and green peppers.

Substitutions
- Bread: You can also use whole wheat bread or make small french bread pizza toast using french bread slices. Or even bagels or English muffins! There are plenty of different breads that will work.
- Cheese: Add additional cheese to make it extra cheesy, such as a little bit of parmesan cheese, feta cheese, goat cheese, or cottage cheese. Also, instead of slices, you can grate your mozzarella or use a blend of shredded cheeses.
- Sauce: Although pizza sauce is best, you can use marinara sauce or plain tomato sauce if needed. With plain tomato sauce, I suggest sprucing it up with some herbs. Remember that although these are all sauces made with tomatoes, they have their differences. Pizza sauce is usually smoother and made with pureed uncooked tomatoes. With marinara, that tomatoes in the sauce are already cooked.
How To Make Pizza Toast
- Preheat oven to 400℉ (200℃).
- Add the bread slices to an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 5 minutes to toast the bread.
4. Spread pizza sauce on each slice of bread. Top each bread slice with 2 slices of cheese. If using, add sliced meat on top, as well as your other favourite toppings. I like to sprinkle on some pepper flakes and parsley flakes for extra pizzazz.
5. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 8-10 minutes or until the cheese melts.
It’s important to place the pizza toast in the oven immediately after assembling it so the bread pieces don’t get soggy!
Tips For Perfect Pizza Toast
- You can cook the pizzas for 2-3 minutes longer if you prefer your cheese to be golden brown rather than just melty. You can also flip on the broil setting to brown the cheese faster!
- Since these pizzas cook quickly, it is crucial to only use pre-cooked meats for the topping. If you want to use chicken or ground beef, cook it on the stovetop first and then add it as a topping. Similarly, with heartier veggies that aren’t quick-cooking, you can saute them first.
- Store any leftover pizza toast in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. Reheat them in the oven or air fryer because the microwave can make the toast soggy!
- After the pizzas come out of the oven, wait a couple minutes before biting into them. They will be really hot.
